Duomo
(see snap shot)
The Cathedral is like a forest in stone, with countless
spires culminating in saints, martyrs and elders, with plant-inspired decoration
on all sides. The man holding a lance with a banner is Saint George, but it is
also supposedly a portrait of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan in 1386 when
the foundation stone of the Cathedral was laid. Gian Galeazzo wasn't exactly a
saint: he seized power by marrying his uncle Bernabo's daughter, and then
imprisoning Bernabò himself who had previously been Duke of Milan. Great
sinners, great churches: Gian Galeazzo launched not only the Cathedral, but the
Certosa of Pavia as well.
You can get a closer view of this and other pinnacles by visiting the Cathedral
rooftops. Until 9 January, the rooftops are open in the evening as well as the
daytime, from 17.00 to 21.00, tickets 12 euro, sold at the north lift (opposite
La Rinascente) from 16.40 on. Christmas music will be broadcast from
loudspeakers at various places on the roofs. On 3, 5 and 7 January, from 19.30
to 20.30, there will be concerts inside the Cathedral, included in the 12 euro
ticket, and performed on the 16,000-pipe organ.
