The moon rises over Chiaravalle Abbey, a splendid late Romanesque-early Gothic construction which, like so many things in Milan, is something of a lucky survivor. Built from 1135, the monastery flourished until 1798 when, during Napoleon’s Cisalpine Republic, religious orders were dissolved.

Chiaravalle’s artefacts were sold, and demolition began. In 1861 the superb Great Cloister that had been built by Bramante in about 1495 was demolished to make way for the railway from Milan to Genoa! Today, restoration of the church continues. The tower has always been a sight cherished by the people of Milan (they call it the Ciribiciaccola). To get there, take bus 77 from Piazza Corvetto (from the line 3 Metro station). Opening hours are approximately Tues-Sun 9-12, 15-18, Mon closed. There is a shop selling organic food, liqueurs, snacks and gift products.
