Celeb Sweet Hearts
Scenes from Milan’s Fashion Week
1970’s. Somewhere in a room with upholstered walls and overpriced arm chairs, a woman sits wrapped in a silk robe. One by one, professional stylists enter with brushes and curling irons in tow, to prepare her for a remarkably fashionable evening. Simultaneously, teams armed with face powder and lipstick transform models into a designer’s muse for what would become the biggest event of the city. Every woman in sight is wearing at least four inch heels when the two scenes collide under the bright lights of Milan’s first fashion shows. And the rest, no doubt, is history. The city has rapidly grown into an internationally acknowledged fashion capital along with New York, London and Paris. Milan is also the center of the fashion publishing industry, from Vogue and Amica, which began publishing in the city in the early 1960’s. Dominating the fashion world for years and producing some of the most recognized and talented designers, this small, underestimated city, rose from the ashes to become a symbol of cutting edge style.
1999. Six of the world’s top ten fashion houses are Italian and four of these companies are based in Milan (Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Versace and Armani). Talent from every discipline has flocked to Milan including photographers, journalists, magazine editors, models and buyers. Geographically the city is a fashion powerhouse, boasting of Como’s silks and industrial talents from all over the Lombardy region, and now attracting a surplus of gifted labor in every sector of the fashion industry. An industry that inevitably created high powered divas, snotty well dressed editors, and demanding designers. But fortunately the devil doesn’t always wear Prada…
… as you’ll see from the September 2010 edition of Milan Fashion Week, when celebrities of every breed will be unleashed wearing every label under the sun.
