One Dream One City

The culture of excellence

By Andrea Mascaretti, head councillor for city districts, Municipality of Milan

The project consists of offering young international talents (university students, researchers and young managers) the opportunity to take part in a training programme involving the City of Milan, local institutions, universities, academies, companies, utilities and local organisations.   The young students will be hosted in Milan and will be able to study for Master’s degrees and postgraduate degrees, and undertake business internship placements in different sectors including design, fashion, tourism, and sport. They will be assisted with accommodation, tutorship, and recreational programmes, and they will receive special rates and passes for local facilities.

The objective of One Dream One City is to present Milan to the international community as a model of excellence in the field of research, innovation and high-level education, in order to attract talented young people from all over the world. The young students will therefore be the drivers of an international community of high-profile professionals trained in Milan. They will work together for the city’s development and growth by acting as spokespeople for the Milanese manufacturing industry and culture in their respective home countries.

Requisites for acceptance include proven excellence in university and professional life, study and/or professional curriculum that matches the requirements of the universities and businesses involved, and a basic knowledge of Italian language and culture. The selection process will take place in the students’ countries of origin. Requirements will be periodically reviewed by the respective universities, professional associations, businesses and utility companies.

The phases of the project comprise accommodation and training from 6 months to 2 years, the ongoing assessment of the skills acquired, the students’ return to their countries of origin, feedback and promotion of the experience, and Milan’s capitalisation of the benefits.

During the project, a tutor will provide support to the students, to ensure that the programmes on offer are properly delivered, to highlight targeted itineraries (sport, theatre, music, exhibitions, museums etc.) and help participants get to know the people of Milan and the city itself.
